Brand Strategy in Norway

Inside the single market through the EEA but outside the EU customs and VAT union — a distinction that changes how invoicing works. I work with founders and CEOs in Norway on positioning, brand management and social media — remotely from Albania, with the local realities below built into the plan rather than discovered halfway through.

Speaking to Norwegian audiences

Norwegian, in two official written standards — Bokmål, used by the large majority, and Nynorsk, which retains official status and regional strength. English proficiency is excellent. Norwegian, Swedish and Danish are largely mutually intelligible in writing, but using Swedish copy in Norway is noticed and is not appreciated.

Advertising and consumer protection in Norway

The Markedsføringsloven governs marketing practice, enforced by the Forbrukertilsynet (Consumer Authority), which publishes direct and unusually practical guidance. Norway requires retouched advertising imagery of bodies to be labelled — a specific obligation with no EU-wide equivalent, and one that catches out imported beauty and lifestyle campaigns.

Data protection and privacy

GDPR applies through the EEA agreement, supervised by Datatilsynet, so the substantive privacy position matches the EU.

The platform mix in Norway

Facebook and Instagram lead with very high penetration, alongside strong Snapchat use that persists into adult demographics more than elsewhere in Europe. LinkedIn is solid for B2B. TikTok is growing. Digital infrastructure and payment adoption are excellent.

How buying decisions get made

Egalitarian, informal and quietly confident. Hierarchy is downplayed, first names are universal, and overt status signalling is counterproductive. Work-life boundaries are firm. Sustainability claims are examined seriously and greenwashing is actively pursued by the regulator.

Invoicing, tax and terms

Norway is in the EEA but outside the EU VAT area, so the EU reverse charge does not apply — Norwegian VAT rules govern instead, and services purchased from abroad are generally handled by the Norwegian business accounting for VAT itself. Invoicing is in Norwegian kroner or euro by agreement. This is the practical difference between Norway and its EU neighbours and it belongs in the contract.

What it costs

Every engagement is scoped individually, because the work depends on where a brand already is rather than on a package tier. Pricing is agreed in writing before anything starts, and I will tell you if what you need is smaller than what you asked for.

04

Optimise

Continuously measure, refine, and scale what works to maximise your brand's impact.
